Lingerie We Love - For Every BODY!

If you’ve checked out my previous gift guides, you’ll know that we have lots of great new stock in for the holiday season. Since we have a larger inventory this month, I thought I’d put up a guide to help you find the stuff that will look great on your (or on your special someone). Read on for our best bras and sleepwear options for all body types.

Straight Shapes:

Straighter body types provide a great canvas for lingerie. While feminine details can look oversized or too obvious on curvier ladies, they’re perfect on ladies with with less defined waists. Get in on the holiday fun with our Fifi set by Tutti Rouge in Scarlet. The color is on point for the holidays, the ruffle and polka dot details are lovely - and it also provides great cleavage.

If you are a fan of plainer lingerie, try our Lace Temptation Balconet bra by Le Mystere. It’s a great everyday bra but also comes in a seasonal Frost Gray.

Hourglass Shapes:

If you’re an hourglass, you know that the challenge is finding something that fits both your top and bottom at the same time. This season, solve the problem with one of our stretchy signature chemises or camisoles by Tia Lyn. These perfect lingerie basics are available in black or red and are extremely versatile. We’ve seen customers wear them as dresses, as lingerie and as sleepwear. If you’re full busted, we also carry great bra and panty sets like the Nichole by Tutti Rouge and the Black Licorice Dessous Set by Claudette.

Pear Shapes:

Our pear shaped customers frequently want more waist definition, which is where pieces like this Classic Underbust Corset come in. This piece provides both support and shaping, all while looking sexy and fashionable. You may want to refer to our blog series about corsetry.

Not all pregnant women have the same shape, but they all have one need in common: a great t-shirt bra that works for both pregnancy and nursing. This Dark Croissant Flexible Wire bra has it all: flexible underwires for comfortable support, smooth and soft fabric for comfort and easy nursing clips that can be undone with one hand. Just like your favorite t-shirt bra, but built for the new you.

How to Buy the Perfect Lingerie Gift, Even When You Don’t Know Anything About Lingerie

The holidays are approaching, which means that some of you are thinking about surprising your loved ones with some sexy new lingerie sets! Lingerie can be confusing and intimidating, so today Mademoiselle Lolita has some tips to make things easier. Finding the perfect lingerie set is kind of like solving a mystery: all you have to do is gather some information and then put the clues together to find the best solution. Today we’ll teach you the basics of lingerie sizing, along with how to buy a set that your special someone will want to wear over and over again.

Step One: Snoop Smartly

The first thing you need to know when you want to buy someone lingerie as a gift is their size. If you’re a man, you may not be aware that this is more complicated than just reading the tag as your tear a bra off someone. Most women wear multiple bra sizes in multiple brands. To start, go through her lingerie drawer and take note of the sizes that you see the most often. If there is a bra that she wears frequently or seems to prefer, take note of both the size and brand. Do the same with underwear. Write down the common underwear sizes that you see as well as the style. Does she own all boyshorts or thongs? Women tend to have strong preferences when it comes to underwear styles, so make sure you have a sense of what she actually wears.

Lastly, look at the colors in her lingerie drawer. Are they all in the same color family? Are they all neutrals? This will tell you what types of colors she feels most confident in. On the off chance she owns lots of print bras, take note of this as well.

Step Two: Use Your Clues

At this point, you should have an idea of what styles, sizes and colors your loved one gravitates to. The best lingerie gifts tend to be variations on what someone already has, with either a thematic spin or something slightly new or boundary pushing. For instance, if you want to buy her a lingerie sat in red and she only wears neutrals, make sure the bra and panty are a style that she already wears and loves. Conversely, if you want to buy her a plunge bra and a thong when she only wears full cup bras and high waisted panties, make sure it’s in a color she will find irresistible and will feel great in.

Step Three: When Buying A Gift, Always Buy the Full Set

It’s easy to feel like a bra is enough, but nothing says luxury like a matching set. If you want to score extra points, pick up a robe that matches and turn it into a three piece gift set. If you need help picking out an extra piece to match, just contact Mademoiselle Lolita for some advice!

By following these three easy steps, you can ensure that you buy a lingerie gift that she will love and wear for years. If you need more specific advice on sizing, styles or gift sets please contact Mademoiselle Lolita. We’d be thrilled to help pick out items, offer advice or put together a custom gift set for you.

For ensuring that your recipient will get exactly what they want (or if you're just feeling overwhelmed by the options), you can never go wrong with a gift certificate or schedule a fitting appointment via our online scheduler. If she's been a previous client we have her size recorded. We  keep track of all of our clients' sizes and style preference.

Corsetry 103: Purchasing and Maintaining your Investment (part 3 of 3)

Now that we've covered corset types and waist training you're ready to pick your first corset. We are a proud retailer of traditional overbust and underbust corsets.  We partner with one of the most respected European corset lines in the industry to bring you the best quality. In this blog, we will cover everything you need to know before you make your purchase. However, we strongly advise consulting with one of our expert fitters.  Our stock corsets are made in standard sizes and fabrics; however, almost every stock corset can be made to measure.

Purchasing a Corset

To start, you’ll need to determine your goals. Ask yourself the following questions:  Will I be wearing the corset every day? Do I want to reduce the size of my waist? Will I be wearing it on special occasions only? Will I be wearing this corset as outerwear, intimate wear, or as a fashion piece?

If you've decided to purchase a traditional corset after you've weighed your options, you've decided to make an investment. You will want to get the most out of your investment.

Body type(s)

  • Slim Figure - short torso, lean, small bust
  • Curvy Fit Figure – full C cup, Small D cup
  • Fuller-Figure – Fuller bust, fuller hips, or large hips
  • Plus size Figure - natural waist over 35”, customizable up to 60”

 Traditional Corsets Components:

  • Busk – front opening of the corset.
  • Boning – Our corsets have steel boning. Boning produces the shape and structure of the corset. Fashion corsets often have plastic boning.
  • Laces - Corsets are held together by lacing, usually along the back. Laces are used to tighten or loosen the corset. Always loosen the laces before opening the busk.
  • Modesty panel - This covers the gap between the corset and your skin to give you a smooth look.

Seasoning – Seasoning is the term used to describe breaking in your corset. Seasoning serves two purposes. It allows you to become comfortable wearing your corset for long periods and it helps the corset mold to your exact shape. It is really important to season your corset before considering waist training. After purchasing your corset, you’ll want to wear it for short time intervals, 1-2 hours maximum.  Slowly increase the amount of time you wear it .  You will notice after a few wears, your corset will start to form to your body. It will become easier to lace as it starts to mold to you. As a basic rule, lace your corset to fit snugly, but not as tight as it will possibly go, while seasoning. Failure to properly season your corset can cause damage to the busk and/or boning (vertical steel rods that provide support and shape). It could take several wears to complete the process. Don’t rush it. You’ll thank us later.

Lacing your corset - Your corset will arrive laced and ready to wear. Open the busk and loosen the back laces. Flatten the modesty panel. Make sure that you've loosen the back laces so there is minimal pressure on the busk. Wrap it around your torso. Close the front. Then tighten the laces. You may need help from a friend the first couple of times. This will get easier as the corset becomes seasoned. Never take your corset off or put in on without loosening the back laces first. You may damage the busk. Never tie your corset laces about your waist. This is a bad habit and it will eventually cause tracks on the fabric.

Fabrics - We have quite a few corset colors and prints.

  • Satin - is sexy and everyone loves to see their shape in a sexy shiny corset. This is our baseline fabric. It looks great and it’s available in many colors.
  • Coutil - is the most durable and recommended for those that will be wearing their corset on a daily basis.
  • PVC – playful with many colors to choose from. Cheaper but less durable than leather.
  • Brocade – exotic woven fabrics. Stylish and often colorful.
  • Silk – Luxury. Only the best. Exclusive styles and patterns.

Remember that some fabrics create more warmth than others. Silk is great for warmer weather, while leather or brocade is better for cooler weather. If you want to corset during the hottest part of the summer, look at cotton or coutil options.

Garter belts - standard 4 garters attached. Extra garters can be added for a nominal cost.

Dry-cleaning and Care

Your corset may require occasional spot cleaning. Never machine wash or immerse your corset in water. Make sure you take your corset to a reputable dry cleaner. Present your corset for inspection. Open the busk to show there are no pulls, tears, or buckles at the seams or near the boning. You should not have to unlace your corset before dry cleaning. Ask the dry cleaner to place the corset in a laundry or garment bag.

The easiest way to keep your corset clean is to always wear a thin fabric layer between your skin and the corset, like a tank top, slip or undershirt.

Corsetry 102: Corset Types and Waist Training (part 2 of 3)

Corsets can be used for many different functions: for waist training, as fashion pieces, as intimate wear and as outerwear. Today we're going to cover the different types of corsets so you can decide which might be best for you, your goals, and your lifestyle!

We've covered the two main types of corsets (overbust and underbust) before, but today we're going to talk about the different types of corset construction. Fashion corsets are generally made with plastic boning and high fashion fabrics. While they will give you some shaping, they are mostly worn outside the clothes as part of an outfit or as intimate wear. These will also be less expensive, as plastic components are cheaper than steel. If you want a corset for a sexy night in (or a sexy Halloween costume) go with that has plastic boning.

Waist Training

If you want to see a serious waist reduction or to waist train for a more permanent reduction, you'll need to invest in QUALITY steel boned corset. Corsetry is an extreme shaping technique. Waist training has become popular on social media lately through Kim Kardashian's posts, but corsets shouldn't be confused with the waist cinchers that she wears. Waist training is only safe in a quality corset that fits properly - any other approach can be damaging to both you and the corset. It's a slow but rewarding process, so make sure to let us know if you are looking to start your waist training journey. One can change their shape, with dedication to the practice, when combined with a healthy diet and exercise.

However, many women simply want a corset to help them attain an hourglass figure for events or under formal wear. In that case, steel boned is still the best option for the greatest waist reduction. These corsets can be made from breathable and comfortable materials, so they feel as great as they look underneath your clothes.

Key Measurements

For the best fit, you will need to measure your torso length, waist, underbust, bust, and hip measurements. Corsets are ordered by waist size; however, it is important to measure your hips, under bust, and torso length. If purchasing a corset for the first time, order a waist size 4 inches (5-10cm) smaller than your natural waist size. This is a general rule but every BODY is different. The corset should feel comfortable with no digging into your hips or thighs while seated. You may want a professional to take your measurements. (Mademoiselle Lolita's staff is available for private measurement consultations. We highly recommend getting a fit consultation before purchasing.)

  • Waist - Measure your waist at your belly button. For many people this is the smallest part of your waist.
  • Underbust- Measure your underbust. This is the area also referred to as the back band or rib cage. It is the area directly under your breast.
  • Torso - Measure your torso length from your underbust to the fullest part of your hips. The torso length is important if you have a short torso. You want to be able to sit comfortably without your corset digging into your thighs.
  • Bust - With your bra on, measure the fullest part of your breast. This is important when considering an overbust corset.
  • Hip - measure the widest part of your hip. Do not include your rear in the measurement.

Contact our staff today to get more information about corseting and the type of corset that would serve your needs best. Next time, we'll be talking corset materials and the fine points of corsetry (like how to put one on without breaking it!).

Corsetry 101: The Basics (part 1 of 3)

When we think of corsets, many images come to mind. For some of us, it's the glamorous wasp-waisted movie stars of yesteryear. For some of us, it's those scary looking diagrams with all of the internal organs moved over. The reality of modern day corsets isn't actually represented by either image - as you'll hopefully read on to find out!

Why Wear a Corset?

There are lots of different reasons to wear a corset. Some women love them as another shapewear tool. When a corset is used throughout most of the day as a shapewear tool to effect semi-permanent figure changes, that is called waist training. Some women just find them sexy and want to wear them as part of their bedroom attire. I've also met many women with back problems who adore them for the extra back support that corsets provide. Whatever your reason, the first thing you'll need to pick out a corset is some basic knowledge.

What Are Corsets Made Of?

Corsets were traditionally made out of whalebone stays and various types of fabric, although now steel bones have replaced whalebones. Other corsets are made mostly as lingerie and are made from hard plastic boning. If you want to waist train or see a serious waist reduction, look for corsets with spiral steel boning, like our Inviting 1891. If you just want to try the look out for fun, plastic will do just fine. The top layer of a corset can be made out of almost any type of fabric, from cotton to silk. Often it will have various decorative element as well.

Underbust Versus Overbust:

There are two types of corsets: underbust corsets and overbust corsets. Overbust corsets serve as both bra and corset, while underbust corsets generally come to the bottom of your bra band. An underbust corset will give you a cleaner line underclothing and possibly more coverage in the hips. An underbust works better for more extreme figures and is more like a waist cincher.

If you've got a particularly curvy figure, make sure that you choose a corset that can accommodate it. Look for a corset designed to cinch figures with more than a 10" difference between waist and hips - your figure will look better for it and you'll be more comfortable.

Now that you're armed with some knowledge, it's time to choose the perfect corset for you. If you're going to be wearing it in the bedroom only, pick a corset with a bold and flattering color. We love these when worn daringly with just a matching pair of pasties and panties! If you want to look extra curvy in your favorite little black dress, try a steel boned overbust in a plain color. Alternatively, embrace the lingerie as outerwear look and try a fancy overbust corset with a long skirt for a different look.

Which corset will you try first?

Celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month With Mademoiselle Lolita

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - While it’s certainly a topic that we’re aware of all year round,  this special awareness month reminds us of the importance of screening and early detection. In addition, there are tons of opportunities to raise funds for this important cause.

Mademoiselle Lolita is hosting an event of our own - a lingerie showcase to show off tons of new styles as well as our beautiful models, delicious hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Because what better way is there to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month than to show off our ta-tas in the best fashions?

Fashion and bra-fitting are all well and good, but October is more than just an excuse to stock up on new bras. We’re also bringing light to herculean efforts being made to fight and prevent this terrible disease. With a topic as scary and seemingly uncontrollable as breast cancer, we want to remind you what you can do to fight! First things first, the importance of early detection cannot be stressed enough. Statistics show that minority women are less likely to get breast cancer but have a higher rate of breast cancer mortality. Getting screened is essential.  Did you know that when breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the five-year survival rate is 100%? When most statistics are staggeringly terrifying, this gives us reason for hope…and a reason to schedule and keep your annual or biannual doctor’s appointment. We know how hard it is to fit appointments into a busy schedule, but it could be a matter of life or death. Don’t procrastinate any longer! Did you check yourself this month? Well did you? Early detection starts with you!

At our Lingerie Showcase, you'll see the latest trends displayed on our beautiful models. We've chosen models of varying sizes and nationalities so that you may see how our garments fit on the bodies of real women. After all, embracing our differences is the first step in finding the size and style that fits you best.

The Showcase is about celebrating the beauty of being a woman, the beauty of diversity, and the beauty of taking the time to take care of yourself. It’s a reminder to set aside the time to enjoy a night out and learn about the importance of quality lingerie and proper fit, and even more so a reminder of the importance to take the time to schedule a screening. Let breast cancer awareness month be your way of investing in yourself and your health, and have a little fun doing it too!

Be sure to RSVP to our event through the link in the invite, and I look forward to seeing you on the 17th!
